Product Description

This fun and engaging PowerPoint will supplement and reinforce the digraphs “ai” and “ay” as presented in lessons one through three (level 2) of the Phonics for Reading Program (Archer, Flood, Lapp and Lungren, 2009). Four activities, which use letters on virtual tiles, will provide students with additional practice spelling and reading the words in an exciting new format! Research-based strategies including building words for spelling, wait time, and choral reading are efficiently incorporated into each activity allowing the instructor to apply them with the click of a button. Each activity is described in more detail below. Please leave feedback! Thanks for looking!

Word Building:
Practice reading and spelling the words with this engaging activity! Ten letters are used to build 17 words with the vowel sounds “ai” and “ay.” Words build off one another so only one or two letters are being changed with each new word. Letters to cut out and a direction sheet are provided.

Letter Slide:
Students practice discriminating between short vowel sounds and the new digraph as letters slide away and reveal what is underneath. I have included one set for “ay” words and one set for “ai” words that includes short vowel blends and consonant digraphs.

Choral Read:
This activity allows the instructor to provide thinking time without having to put his/her hand up and down. Each word appears through an engaging animation on click. When the presenter feels enough time has been given for all students to read the word silently, the presenter clicks a second time and the word makes a slight jump to cue students to read the word aloud together.

Challenge Word Breakdown:
Words fly in one part at a time from the right or left on click. Students read the parts silently and then aloud when the word makes a slight jump on click.

PowerPoints to coincide with each lesson in levels 1-3 of the Phonics for Reading Program are also available!
