This is a two for one packet! This set of phonogram cards can be used to teach students the logic and structure of spelling. Instead of memorizing words, your students will be able to use spelling rules that "make sense,” which will help them remember the information much more readily. No more invented spelling!
Pages 1-12 contain words with the following single and double phonograms: short a, long a, b, c, ck, short e, silent e, f, g, h, short i, k, l, m, n, short o, p, r, s, t, short u, v, and w. These cards can be sorted out by individual phonograms or the following word families: -at, -ap, -ake, -in, -ock, -est, -ug, and -ate. Pages 13-30 contain words with additonal single phonograms and more complex phonograms: sh, ou, wr, ought, ee, ur, ir, ch, aw, x, z, s, short u, n, b, oo, ai, oe, ey, oa, ie, ph, long o, igh, th, -b ending (silent), ui, ow, er, ou, wh, long i, oy, z, w, short e, qu, ea, long a, and ar.
These are great if they are used as flashcards for review before guided reading or you can cut them vertically at each line and use them as puzzles in a literacy center. Each picture contains a word that has been broken down into its individual phonograms for easier retention.
The last page in this packet can be used as an option if you want to incorporate writing into your lesson. The students can write each word and mark the phonograms once they have read it or assembled the puzzle.
I have successfully used this activity with K-2nd students. My students love activities that are hands on and have colorful pictures.
