Great activity for struggling readers/writers or students who have difficulty producing speech sounds clearly! Research has shown that phonological awareness is the greatest predictor for reading success. Many curriculums focus on phonics (letter-sound), however they lack phonemic awareness activities. This activity focuses on phonemic awareness, which focuses only on the sounds in our words and how they can be manipulated without using letter names (i.e. "cat" becomes "kuh" "ae" "tuh"). I have included colored squares to cut out, however colored blocks, cars, legos, etc. may work as well. I have used this with many students who are struggling with reading and/or speech sounds.
