Sentence Segmentation

Sentence segmentation is one of the first steps in phonological awareness. It’s important that we really teach our students to hear individual words in a whole sentence and the ability to count the words in a sentence. Students need to be fluent before they can move to syllables. If we want our students to be able to read and write by recognizing chunks, then this is the first step!

Games

The following sentence segmentation games can be used in whole group, small group, or intervention. It is most effective in small groups of 4 to 6 students. These games can improve students’ understanding of how to hear individual words in a whole sentence.
