Description

Phonological patterns can be really hard to explain so these simple handouts aim to educate, inform and hopefully empower parents and teachers to be part of the therapy process. As SLPs, we have an advantage of interpreting and understanding children's phonology better, because we are aware of their patterns.

WATCH A 90 SECOND VIDEO PREVIEW OF THE PHONOLOGICAL PATTERNS: HANDOUTS FOR PARENTS & TEACHERS

Each page introduces the idea of phonology and how some children might have difficulties organizing sounds. It then highlights the age that most children stop using the process, gives a visual example of what the child meant to say vs. what they actually said and lists other sounds that might be impacted in this error pattern. I strongly recommend reading & discussing this sheet with parents and teachers to answer any of their questions.

Phonological Patterns in this set: Assimilation, Voicing, Devoicing, Final Consonant Deletion, Fronting, Stopping, Deaffrication, Weak Syllable Deletion, Cluster Reduction, Gliding, Backing, Initial Consonant Deletion and Coalescence.

Who would use them: These might be useful to provide to parents at an evaluation or assessment, at a feedback session, during an IEP or school meeting and to other family members and people in the child's life.

Using norms: These handouts are intended for the SLP to distribute and discuss. Norms are referenced in the handouts and it is encouraged that you have an understanding about 'cut-offs' and typical speech development and not just rely heavily on the age that a process usually declines. I have listed the references (journal articles and texts) that I used to create this resource in the resource.
