Description

What is the Phonological Skills Assessment (PSA)?

The PSA is a universal screening assessment for emergent readers (in grades K-1) that assesses 15 key phonological awareness skills. It is aligned with the CCSS Reading Foundational Skills standards.

The PSA can also be used as a diagnostic tool to analyze the discrete phonological skills of struggling readers in Grade 2 and beyond.

Why is it important?

Phonological awareness is one of the five key components of structured literacy. A child’s ability to hear and manipulate sounds in spoken language is a precursor to reading and spelling success.

Use of the PSA will inform the teacher of the class’ overall understanding of Phonological Awareness. Analysis of individual student performance will assist the teacher in gathering baseline data and/or inform instruction.

Guidelines for Analysis

What makes our PSA unique?

We believe informed instruction is most effective. Therefore, we strive to create products that not only align to current research, but also provide support for teachers. The PSA was designed with this goal in mind.

Our 'Guidelines for Analysis’ assists teachers in identifying common areas of confusion for students. Once these areas have been determined, teachers are better able to provide targeted instruction.

If you enjoy this product, be on the lookout for our PSA-aligned resources aimed to reinforce and remediate.
