Photographs of Wuhan and Hubei Province, China

- PDF

Description
Wuhan, the Chinese city where COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, apparently originated, is where I taught English for 2 years at a university. It was a wonderful experience and I am so sad to see the effect this epidemic is having on the people there and throughout China. To give educators a glimpse of happier times in Wuhan and Hubei Province, I am pleased to share with you a few of the photographs I took when I lived in the city in the 1990s. You can use these photos when teaching about the coronavirus in particular or China in general.
There are 8 photos showcasing various places in Wuhan and Hubei Province. They include the following images:
♥ A statue of Mao at the entrance to the university where I worked
♥ A tofu vendor at the university’s food market
♥ A park scene
♥ A pagoda
♥ The Yellow Crane Tower
♥ A street scene in downtown Wuhan
♥ Lotus flowers on a lake in Hubei Province
♥ The Three Gorges on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province
Each photo is captioned so you know what it depicts. The images in the download do not have the watermark on them, just a very small copyright notice in the bottom left corner in gray text. (The cover photo shows a famous bridge crossing the Yangtze River.)
Also included in this resource about China is a page that provides background information about Wuhan. The table of contents includes a map showing the provinces of China and I’ve placed a star where Wuhan is so you can show your students where the city is located.
Here are some ways you can use these photos with your students; they can do these tasks orally and/or in writing:
★ Ask students to describe what they see in the photographs
★ Give students practice using prepositions by having them describe where things are in the photographs
★ Tell students to compare and contrast a photo to a similar place they are familiar with
★ Ask students to explain how a photo makes them feel
★ Have students state if their ideas about Wuhan and Hubei have changed after viewing all the photographs
I hope this resource helps counteract all the negative publicity Wuhan has gotten as a result of being the epicenter of the new coronavirus. I greatly enjoyed my time there and I wish the people of Wuhan all the best as they strive to overcome this deadly disease.
