In this Photoshop lesson, students use a variety of Photoshop Tools and techniques to add in a realistic aurora to an existing image totally from scratch. Each student works with a unique photo of a coastline at night (40 different photos are included in the download) and works through the instructions to not only place an aurora in the sky, but to add a reflection onto the water.
Students gain valuable experience using Photoshop tools such as Quick Selection, Lasso, Pen, Brush, Eraser, and more as well as such photo editing techniques as creating, renaming, and merging layers, creating layer groups, modifying layer blending modes, applying Warp/Skew/Perspective, editing brush presets, working with levels, changing Hue/Saturation, modifying layer Opacity, and using layer styles. Students also get exposure to such Photoshop filters as Render Clouds and Flame, Motion Blur, and Ripple Distort. This is a fun exercise with an awesome result that teaches basic to intermediate Photoshop skills, and make a great introduction to Photoshop.
This lesson assumes students have never used Photoshop. A file is included which lists of all the tools this lesson covers. Instructions are written for Photoshop CC17, but can be easily adjusted for use with any version of the software. Offered in .docx format to allow you to edit and personalize the instructions to meet the needs of your class/course.
