PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This mega-tutorial offers comprehensive coverage of Photoshop. This lesson not only gives students an awesome keepsake that they will be proud of, but teaches just about every basic to intermediate Photoshop tool/technique needed to make students proficient in the software. Students start with a blank file and use various Photoshop tools to add in land, water, rivers, mountains, multiple territories, cities, place names, coastal accents, ancient map elements, and gridlines to create a striking and beautiful old world map. As they work, students learn all of Photoshop's basic tools and functions, becoming intermediate Photoshop users by the end of the lesson. After completing the map, students can print out their creation on poster paper to create a full sized poster that they can take home.

Included in this lesson is a cross-curricular Social Studies mini-lesson detailing how and why cities are located where they are. Students learn why it is important for cities to be located near such things as sources of water, livestock, arable land, trade routes, mountains, and more. A separate exercise has students defining why the area surrounding a city is important and identifying pros and cons to establishing cities in a variety of settings. The end result is that students are required to place their cities in specific areas of their map for a specific reason and to be able to defend/explain why a particular city was established where it was. This makes for old world maps that are far more realistic than if students simply placed their cities at random, and students are happy (even eager) to discuss the layout of their map.

This is an extended lesson that takes multiple weeks to complete, but allows students to build on basic concepts and see how a complex image is constructed over time and how multiple tools can be used to build up a complicated image.

This lesson assumes students have never used Photoshop. Instructions are written for Photoshop CS3, but can easily be adjusted for use with any version of the software. Offered in .doc format to allow you to edit and personalize the instructions to meet the needs of your class/course.

Don't bother with poorly written tutorials on the Internet that you can't edit - download, modify, and use this lesson with your students today! Enjoy!
