I love to use this quick assessment in my unit on Photosynthesis! I usually give the assessment as an individual quiz, then when everyone is finished, I have students get into small groups to discuss their answers, making notes on their paper in a different color of pen or marker. After small group discussion, I go over the answers in whole group discussion and ask specifically: What background knowledge did you use to try to answer the questions? Were you able to use the simplified chemical equation for photosynthesis to structure your answers to the questions? Did group discussion change your answer? If so, in what way? Then I collect all the papers to see where everyone is. This helps tremendously in preparing for the next lesson!
