This is a fun card sort/matching activity directly aligned to Next Generation Science Standards MS-LS1-6 and MS-LS1-7. It includes 17 types of cards (in 3 different sets) to be matched onto two “boards” that depict a mitochondrion (where cellular respiration takes place) and a chloroplast (where photosynthesis takes place). The cards include chemical formula and, element/atom models, visual models of the molecules involved with the two processes – use one type or both to increase exposure!
With this activity, students will analyze, discuss, and ultimately place types of energy (ATP and sunlight), molecules (H2O, C6H12O6, CO2, & O2), and labels (Mitochondrion, Chloroplast, Input, & Output) into appropriate places on large diagrams of a mitochondrion and/or chloroplast. Each diagram is set up to reinforce the idea of a chemical formula, as well the transfer of matter and energy with arrows pointing into and out of the two organelles. Once students sort and place the cards, it will be very easy for you to see who has mastered your learning target(s) and who has not.
