Overview
This hands-on manipulative, reading passage, and student assessment page requires students to identify the components of photosynthesis and explain the role of each in the process. Using this colorful, clear game board, student groups will work collaboratively to name and describe all components involved in photosynthesis and develop an understanding of the carbon dioxide-oxygen cycle in plants. Students have the opportunity to practice the game multiple times until they attain mastery of the basic concepts of photosynthesis. There is also a reading connection that will help students engage with informational text to continue to strengthen academic vocabulary and content knowledge. The student assessment page allows each student to individually demonstrate their knowledge of how the key components move into and out of the plant in the process of photosynthesis. Additionally, there is a writing assessment that asks students to connect content-specific vocabulary to describe how the different components cycle into and out of the plant. Big idea: Plants are an important part of the biosphere because they have the unique ability to convert light energy into food energy (sugar) in a process called photosynthesis. This conversion of one form of energy (light) into another usable form of energy (chemical) is not only necessary for plants to grow and survive but also for all organisms relying on plants/producers as a direct or indirect food source in the food web.
