This lab is designed to meet the Photosynthesis NGSS HS-LS1-5 standard. In the lab, students illustrate how photosynthesis transforms light energy into stored chemical energy. Students will use an aquatic plant (such as elodea), BTB indicator, carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to demonstrate photosynthesis. Students will investigate three different questions: (1) Does elodea use carbon dioxide when exposed to sunlight for a period of time? (2) Is sunlight necessary for elodea to carry on photosynthesis? (3) Is carbon dioxide taken in, given off, or involved in any way while elodea is not carrying on photosynthesis? Lab includes a lab introduction rubric, data rubric, and conclusion rubric.
