PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

I think phrasal verbs are necessary for English language fluency. That said - they are both difficult to teach and to learn. Many teachers opt for introducing phrasal verbs in a laundry list style of putting the main verb with a slew of prepositions that create many different phrasal verbs. While this method may work for some students, the resounding feedback I get from my students is that it just confuses them more. Without context being provided, the phrasal verbs all sort of meld together in the brain causing the students to misuse them and interchange them incorrectly. To provide context, I often try to do some real-life associations that will help them to mentally attach the verb to the action.

But what about when this isn't practical in the classroom?

I stumbled upon a vintage illustration of a hectic scene in a supermarket and decided to break the picture down into 4 sections and attach a simple list of 10 phrasal verbs that has a corresponding visual association. While this wasn't an approach all students liked, I got positive feedback from others who liked both the visual example of the action and enjoyed finding alternate definitions and uses for the given phrasal verbs.

When teaching a foreign language, I count a method as a success when I get positive feedback from at least half of my students.

Students have success with what works for them ... the mission of the teacher is to introduce a number of methods and help them find what it is that works for them!

This is a 2-page informational sheet - the first part in a series of four. The first page is a portion of the original illustration labelled with numbered circles. The second sheet is a list of 10 phrasal verbs, definitions and example sentences that correspond to the numbered illustration.

For the complete workbook which includes all 4 sections of the illustration and all 4 lists of phrasal verbs, an instructional sheet outlining the general rules of phrasal verbs, and an added worksheet, please see the listing for Phrasal Verbs for Visual Learners Workbook in my shop.
