I always had a hard time explaining what jogging v. running was to my youngest students. I decided to use a visual aide incorporating "gears". This poster stays up all year long as a reminder of which "gear" we are using for our activity. We use 1st gear for walking into class, getting in line or in groups. 2nd gear is used when we are doing a warm up jog and not worried about how fast we are going. 3rd gear is a run, but must be at a pace that we can handle for an extended amount of time. Finally, 4th gear is as fast as we can for things like racing or testing our legs to see how fast we are. It is a great reference point before beginning many of our every day class activities.
