Bundle Description

Need interactive activities to help teach and review the physical properties of matter? This bundle includes a foldable and readings and thinking task cards that allow your students to do just that. There is a reading passage and task for each of the key properties of matter, including physical state of matter, mass, magnetism, density, conductivity of heat and electricity, and solubility. Then the foldable notes page is a way for students to learn about each property of matter through fill-in-the-blank notes. In addition, students have the opportunity to match each property on the foldable with an image and a statement about how we can classify matter using that property. Together these two products provide a solid foundation for the physical properties of matter.

Big idea: The world around us is made of matter, and by knowing different physical properties of matter, we are able to measure, categorize, and describe the objects in our everyday lives. This introduction to the physical properties of matter provides the foundation for all studies in the physical sciences.

Core Disciplinary Ideas

This interactive notes page builds a foundation for the following core disciplinary idea:

• PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter

o Matter and Its Interactions: Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties (5-PS1-3)

Crosscutting Concepts: Scale, Proportion, and Quantity, Energy and Matter

Scientific and Engineering Practices: Developing and using models, constructing explanations (for science), obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

Science Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)

5.5A - TSIET classify matter based on physical properties, including mass, magnetism, physical state (solid, liquid, and gas), relative density (sinking and floating), solubility in water, and the ability to conduct or insulate thermal energy or electric energy;

5.5B – TSIET demonstrate that some mixtures maintain physical properties of their ingredients such as iron filings and sand and sand and water.

5.5C – TSIET i identify changes that can occur in the physical properties of the ingredients of solutions such as dissolving salt in water or adding lemon juice to water.
