In Chapter 4, we introduce basic chemistry to our study of physical science. This chapter looks at how our understanding of the atom has changed over time. We consider atomic structure, the parts of the atom, atomic number, mass number, isotopes, ions and the periodic table. Basic concepts of atomic math are covered including the determination of neutron number, charges on ions, and weighted averaging as it relates to atomic weights that appear on the periodic table. This product uses the interactive capabilities of a computer. The chapter has an embedded end-of-chapter quiz, uses graphics, animations, user interactivity or embedded video on almost all pages. This product is designed to provide bite-sized pieces of information in an effort to enhance the scientific literacy of our next generation, not to overwhelm them with sheer quantity of information. Chapter 4 section titles: What is chemistry? • States of Matter • Models of the Atom • Atomic Discoveries • Structure of the Atom • The Periodic Table • Chemical Symbols • Classification of Matter • Atomic Number • Mass Number • Ions • Isotopes • Determining the Atomic Weight of an Element • Chapter Concept Map • Checking Your Understanding. This product works both on a Macintosh or PC computer.
