Physical and Chemical Changes

Chemical and physical changes are such a great exploration in the classroom! This time-saving resource will make this easy for you and exciting for your elementary students! This is an amazing set of tasks for learning about physical and chemical changes! This idea takes very simple concepts, with the goal of producing great results- especially in critical thinking!

Note: This resource is a multi-day activity.

What is the activity?

This set is about Physical and Chemical Changes. Students will explore a chemical change, read about physical and chemical changes, build understanding with a card sort, investigate with a new chemical change, apply what they have learned, and then bring it all together with a fabulous ending activity!

What is your prep? Materials for experiments are needed in addition to this package:

• vinegar
• baking soda
• small cups, spoons, measuring cups, and spoons
• balloons,
• eye droppers
• 6 kinds of powders or small grain items- like salt, sugar, cornstarch, etc.
• waxed paper
• toothpicks
• hydrogen peroxide
• yeast
• dish soap
• a container of Instant-snow

A number of activities are included and you can choose to do some of the tasks or complete all of them!

The package specifically includes:

Lesson 1- You are provided with a specifics page, teacher directions, a lab sheet with an answer sheet, photos/hints page.

In this lesson, students will be experimenting with mixing two chemicals (safely). They will take a close look at the properties of each chemical and predict what will happen when these two are mixed. After mixing the two chemicals, students will respond by writing about what happened.

Lesson 2- You are provided with a specifics page, 2 pages of teacher directions, a reading passage, a lab sheet with an answer sheet, a sorting activity, photos/hints page.

This lesson has two parts. You can choose not to use part 2. In part 1 students will read about physical and chemical changes and then list examples of each. In part 2, students will test several powders by dropping vinegar on them and record the reaction seen with this combination of two chemicals.

Lesson 3- You are provided with a specifics page, teacher directions, a lab sheet with an answer sheet, a sorting activity, photos/hints page.

In this lesson, students observe a demonstration of a chemical change. Before the demonstration students talk about the signs of a chemical change. Following the demonstration, students use situation cards to try to identify whether the situation is a chemical or physical change.

Lesson 4- You are provided with a specifics page, teacher directions, lab sheet with an answer sheet, photos/hints page.

In this lesson, students observe what happens when water is added to a chemical. They respond to the steps of the experiment and then must determine, with evidence, whether this reaction is chemical or physical.
