This activity is a tasty way for students to identify and apply the differences between physical and chemical properties and changes. Vocabulary and concepts covered in this lesson include: mass, volume, density, mixture, dissolving, solution, saturation, and flammability.
For this activity, I give each student a sugar cube (purchased from local Dollar Store or Wal-Mart). Students first make observations about the substance. Then, I give them a small cup of water for them to test another sugar cube in. Finally, I do a demonstration for the students to test the sugar cube under high heat. Students record their observations at each test and then they discuss which properties were physical and chemical. Students can work on this lab as a group or independently.
