This lab is a fun, tasty activity to help students apply information learned about physical changes of matter. Vocabulary associated with this lab includes ductility, solubility, buoyancy, qualitative, quantitative, and mass. This lesson also introduces students to vocabulary such as atoms, elements, compounds, and molecules.
This activity focuses mostly on physical properties of substances. I give each student a Twizzler (purchased from local Dollar Store or Wal-Mart). Students first make qualitative and quantitative observations about the physical properties of the substance. Then, I give them a small cup of water for them to test another a piece in. Finally, students answer conclusion questions and make inferences based on their observations. Students can work on this lab individually or as a group. This lessons further leads into a good mini-lesson on atoms, elements, compounds, and molecules.
This product is one in a series of labs and activities on physical and chemical properties and changes. The links below will show you the other labs and activities in this series, or you can purchase them all at a bundled price.
