I've found that my physics students learn to solve conservation of energy problems so much better when I start with "Picture Problems" before solving the word problems in the book!
The 2nd problem is that one EVERY physics book throws in, where a pendulum is pulled back so many degrees and the length is given....find the velocity at the bottom of the swing. Easy physics - but tricky math the first time you see it.
