This 11-slide PowerPoint introduces students to Newton's First Law. More specifically, the topics include calculating the force of gravity, calculating the force of friction (both static and kinetic), Newton's First Law, balanced and unbalanced forces, net force, and solving Newton's First Law problems. This PowerPoint includes four practice problems for you to go through with your students. These practice problems utilize the GUESS method of problem solving (Givens, Unknowns, Equations, Substitute, Solve). As these practice problems can be a little more complex (see thumbnails), the PowerPoint has been animated to allow you to show one step of the problem at a time. This PowerPoint focuses on forces in one dimension (up, down, left, and right). Two-dimensional forces are addressed in the fourth PowerPoint of this unit.
This presentation was created for use in a first-year physics course, although it could also be used in a physical science course with a small amount of modification.
