The Momentum and Impulse Demos software is a set of simulations that demonstrate various principles of impulse and momentum.There are five simulations, two dealing with impulse and three dealing with momentum. There are help screens for each of the simulations.
The first demonstration asks which would hurt more: an object that hits you and sticks or an object that hits you and bounces off. The simulation has a dart with a rubber tip that hits an immovable block. The elasticity of the collision can be changed, the force of the collision is shown, and the velocity of the dart can be measured
The second simulation illustrates, with the use of a tennis racquet and ball, how follow through can increase the final velocity of a tennis shot. The time on the racquet can be varied and the force and final velocity are shown.
The third simulation was inspired by the movie The Mighty Ducks where a hockey puck is shot with such velocity that the goalie is propelled at high speeds into the goal. The initial velocity can be changed and the students can see the effect of the puck on the goalie. The final velocity of the goalie is calculated in both m/sec and mi/hr.
The fourth and fifth simulation was inspired by the many war and police shows where the bad guys are shot. After being shot, some do not move at all and others are propelled away at high speeds. In the first of the two simulations, the velocity and mass of the bullet can be set, and the final velocity of the “dummy” that is shot can be measured. The final velocity of the dummy should be calculated by students in both m/sec and mi/hr. In the second of the two simulations, various weapons can be chosen and the dummy can be shot. The velocities and mass of the bullets are realistic and demonstrate what would happen if the bullets were stopped by the dummy.
