Product Description

The 5E, NGSS aligned lesson, Motion in One Direction, is an engaging and interesting lesson. This lesson includes an excellent Engagement video on the physics of downhill skiing, an engaging interactive PowerPoint presentation, and includes online demonstrations to make learning interesting and entertaining. This lesson is in 5E format, and is aligned with NGSS Standard HS-PS1-1 as well as Common Core Standards for ELA and Mathematics.

This unit is for High School NGSS Performance Expectation HS-PS1-1.** Analyze data to support the claim that Newton’s Second Law of Motion describes the mathematical relationship among the net force on a macroscopic object, its mass and its acceleration. **

Note that this lesson focuses heavily on the use of tables and graphs of position or velocity as a function of time. Students will get much instruction and practice in graphing data and interpreting graphs.

This unit also covers the NGSS Science and Engineering Processes of

• Represent data in graphical displays

• Analyze data using tools, technologies, and/or models

The 5E steps are:

**Engage: ** Students watch a video. This video demonstrates the physics of Newton’s Laws, gravity and friction in a dynamic way

**Explore: ** Here, students, or the teacher if that is more appropriate, will access interactive animations on the Physics Classroom site and try to match the correct motion graph with the car’s behavior.

**Explain: ** Present the interactive PowerPoint “Motion in One Dimension”. The student version has blanks which they must fill in as the presentation is given. The teacher version of this PowerPoint has the blanks filled in.

**Elaborate: ** Two elaboration activities are provided.

1. Elaboration 1 - Students must create graphs from data which is given, and then answer questions based on their graphs.

2. Elaboration 2 – The graphs are given and students must answer question based on the graphs.

Answer keys are provided for both elaborations

**Evaluation: ** A thorough assessment test with answer key has been provided. The test covers definitions, creating and analyzing charts and application of the concepts for motion in one dimension.

**Detailed Teacher notes have been provided to cover all aspects of this unit. **
