Product Description
OVERVIEW

The Projectile Motion SIMS (for simulations) software includes three simulations of projectile motion: horizontal, at an angle, and an illustration and explanation of the monkey and the hunter.

While designed as a lecture presentation tool, the software simulations could be used by students to explore projectile motion. For example, students could be asked to find the angle that will give the maximum range.

Product Type: Software - Lecture Presentation, Simulation, Problem Solving, Lesson Plans
Curriculum: Physics / Mechanics / 2Dimensional Motion / Projectile Motion
Level: Grades 9-12 & college, algebra based
Used With: PC Computer (with projector for classroom presentation)

System Requirements: PC Computer with Windows XP or later

INSTALLATION

The software is downloaded as an executive (.exe) file which, when double clicked, will install the Projectile Motion SIMS software on your computer.

There are three types of simulations dealing with the topic of projectile motion which are summarized below. The software includes extensive help in Word format that includes more detailed descriptions of each simulations, example questions, and lesson plans.

Type 1 - Horizontal Cannon I & II

These two simulations illustrate projectile motion where the projectile is propelled horizontally. They are designed to answer questions like whether a dropped bullet or fired bullet will hit the ground first and how the time to hit the ground is effected by the horizontal velocity of the projectile and to illustrate the independence of the x and y directions.

Type 2 - At An Angle

The At An Angle projectile motion simulation is a multi-purpose simulation that can used to illustrate a number of principles dealing with projectile motion at an angle. The simulations can be used to discuss and illustrate which angle will give the projectile the maximum height or the maximum range. Students can be asked to calculate the values for the velocities and distances and then check the answers using the simulations.

Type 3 - Monkey Hunter I - III

There are three monkey hunter simulation screens, I, II, & III. A cannon is aimed directly at a "monkey" that is above and to the right of the cannon. The three screens are designed to illustrate under what circumstances the cannon ball will hit the monkey and why this happens. It leads students through the explanation of why the cannon ball will hit the monkey, first by taking measurements from the simulation (Monkey Hunter II) and then by showing how the vertical distance of the dropped and shot balls are determined by the equation y = vi t + ½ a t2(Monkey Hunter III).

More descriptions and screen shots for the Projectile Motion SIMS software are provided in the Free Preview Download.
