Product Description
Pi Day Activities - Notes, Worksheets, Task Cards and an Assessment
Get excited for Pi Day 2017 with a variety of activities listed below. This product includes resources that can be used for the instruction of circumference and area of circles.

Find Someone Who
This engaging activity has students discussing and summarizing the circumference and area of circles. Students will circulate throughout the room talking to nine different classmates. Students will find someone who can do or explain what’s asked for in the box (one person per box). The student will ask the person to initial one box and to describe the answer to the problem. The other student will summarize and write what was explained.

Vocabulary
This activity has students match ten circle vocabulary words with their definitions. The ten words are circle, circumference, chord, radius, irrational number, center, area, diameter, sector and arc.

This task card activity includes 24 cards covering the following topics: Circumference of Circles, Area of Circles, Vocabulary, Circumference Application, Area of Circles Application and Pi Trivia. The cards are numbered 1 – 4 and increase with difficulty. A student answer sheet and answer key are provided.

Pi Day Poem
This activity has students analyze a short poem about the number pi. Students read it and list as many references to Pi that they can find. They should be able to find the number pi in the words. They also have the opportunity to create their own Pi Poem.

Guided Notes- Circumference and Area of Circles
You will find two half sheets of guided notes for the circumference and area of circles.

Circle Assessment
A five question quiz that has students calculate the circumference and area of circles.

Grassy Goats Application
This product includes six area and circumference problems involving a goat. The first four questions ask students to calculate the area and circumference of a circular area where a goat is chained to a stake. Two additional questions have students calculate the area available for the goat if he is chained to the center of one side of the shed or if the goat is chained to the corner of the shed.

Canned Food Exploratory Problem
Students bring in canned foods for this activity. Using a tape measure, students measure the circumference and diameter of each can. On the table, students write a ratio comparing the circumference to the diameter. After measuring ten cans, the students discover the circumference divided by the diameter will be a number equal to or approximately equal to 3.14. After the activity, we donate the cans to a local food pantry.

Cardboard Pizza Circle Activity
Cardboard Pizza Circle Activity – This activity has students divide a cardboard pizza circle into various topics related to Pi day and circles. Some possibilities might include Pi facts, Chronology of Pi, Pi Jokes, Formulas, Rational and Irrational Numbers, Describe how Pi was discovered (can activity), circle vocabulary and famous mathematicians. Students decorate the front side of the circle. I have included a slide with two smaller canned food pi activity tables which can be glued on the back of the circle. In addition, one slide offers possible answers for each of the sections listed above.
