This Inquiry-based mini unit let's students discover Pi and then confirm their findings with hands on activities. A little history and circumference practice are also included.
Have fun on Pi Day or any day of the year with these engaging activities.
Activity 1: Pop it! Students discover the value of pi by doing an activity with bubbles and string. This inquiry activity will solidify their conceptual understanding of the equation for circumference of circles.
Activity 2: Circumference Practice: Now that they know where the formula comes from, they practice applying it.
Activity 3: History of Pi: Students read some background on the history of pi and answer some questions.
Activity 4: Licorice Lap: This engaging and delicious activity lets students confirm the relationship between circumference and diameter of a circle.
Activities are aligned to Common Core Math Standards.
