Description

In this inquiry lesson, students get to measure circles and discover the relationship between circumference and diameter!

They measure circles in the classroom (or that they bring from home), graph a scatterplot, make connections, and discover the formula for a circle's circumference.

The two-page handout guides student through the activity. It includes:

  • vocabulary
  • measuring circles' diameters and circumferences with string
  • making a graph
  • observations
  • making predictions & improving solutions
  • practice with the circumference formula

The lesson is meant to help students see the relationship between circumference, diameter, and radius, so they will remember the formula. It is most appropriate for middle school, but will also reinforce the concept with high school geometry students.

The download comes with a basic lesson guide and answer key.

You will receive a PDF and an editable version in PowerPoint.

We used this activity as one of our Pi Day stations and the students loved it. They were all able to complete the activity, even those who were not familiar with the circumference formula.
