### PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

March 14th is arguably the most important day of the year. It is the day math enthusiasts celebrate their beloved irrational number as a rounded rational approximation which is then converted to calendar notation. Pi Day is celebrated by billions of people annually and this year is no different.

In this 9 page document you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, 3 assignments and one project for students to use.

-- “Discovering Pi” -- Students will practice measuring, diameters, radius and circumference on five round objects. I have not listed the objects because that will depend on what is available to you. In the past, I have used bicycle tires, coins, hula hoops, etc. You can have many more than just five objects. I’d actually suggest it to no have traffic jams at measuring stations. You will need string and rulers or tape measures. Students should work in partners or trios.

-- “A Slice of Pi” -- Students will use drawings of pies and slices and their knowledge of pi to calculate the volume of the slice and estimate the volume of the entire whole pie. Central angles are provided in each drawing.

-- “Pi Day” – Students will sketch and measure a slice of real pie to calculate its volume and estimate the volume of the entire pie. This of course is optional. You will need pie which is tricky to work around food allergies, refrigeration and stuff like that. Consult with your school nurse before you try to pull this off. Enjoy! It’s Yummy!
