Explore emotions and animals to show young piano students how to play with expression!
Using this sheet with my students has helped me get a particular sound out of the piano much faster and easier than saying play with emotion.
Some different ways to use this sheet:
1. Student plays a pentascale in different ways to portray the emotion or animal.
2. Student plays an excerpt of a song in different ways to portray the emotion or animal.
3. Student improvises their own 30 second composition to portray the emotion or animal.
Teaching example: I was working with a 7 year old student who needed to play legato, but no matter how many times I asked him to try it smoother and more legato, it was not at all. I finally stopped and asked him to play a C pentascale and went through the list of animals. When we got to snake, he played it with perfect legato. I asked him to now go back to his song and play it like a snake. Fixed!! I then had him draw a snake in the corner of that page in his book so he would remember to play that way every time.
