Scales, arpeggios, and chords are loosely based on the Royal Conservatory of Music’s program and the National Federation of Music Clubs’ theory exam. I add a few skills of my own that I want my students to learn.
The first page is designed to be a cover. I put the student’s name below the level. The frames below each key are large enough to hold small star stickers as things are completed. I print out all the pages and use a binding machine to make books but you could also put them in a 3-ring binder or just hand them out as needed.
I ask students to color something each day they complete the day’s specific practice task. I only ask my students to practice 5 days a week so that is why there are only 5 tasks and 5 items to color on each page. You may wish to number the items so they correlate with the practice tasks more directly.
Notation is printed in red for right hand and blue for left hand. I have also included a keyboard that can be written on (note names/ finger numbers) to help those needing reminders about what notes are used.
On the pages with broken and blocked triads, there are separate sayings for each hand to help students remember to use their 2nd finger only on certain inversions. Each time they say “2” it is their 2nd finger, otherwise it is always their 3rd finger on the middle note of the triad. The sayings work with the blocked (one word per chord) and broken (one word per triplet).
I have also included additional stars, reels, popcorn and sodas in case your students (like some of mine) need to repeat something an additional week. These can be cut and pasted or just colored on the additional pages. They could also be printed on sticker paper.
