Sticker Reward Sheets for Alfred’s Premier Piano Course Method
I created these Reward Sheets to coordinate with each level of Lesson Book for the various Piano Methods that I use for teaching young students. The purpose of the sheet is to emphasize the Musical Concepts that the student is learning at each level. Once the student has mastered the concept he can put a small sticker in the color shaded vertical column to the left of the concept name. If the concept involves a musical notation that the student can draw, I also have them draw the quarter note, half note, treble clef sign, etc. in the blank space to the right of the concept name. This also gives them a visual reinforcement of the notation or concept.
Students really love adding stickers to these sheets and look forward to having an entire row of stickers down the page. Using these sheets makes them more aware of the concepts as opposed to just reading about a new concept in the book. Once they see the concept introduced in the method book they are eager to master it and add the sticker to their page. As a teacher, I find that using the Reward Sheet makes it easier to review the concepts covered at each level. At the first lesson for beginning students I have them place stickers on the first three concepts so that they can visualize how their reward sheet will look when all the concepts have stickers.
I use colors on the Reward Sheet that coordinate with the colors on the Lesson Book, so that each Reward Sheet has a different color scheme. I print the Reward Sheets on a medium weight card stock paper, and I often use colored card stock, i.e. orange for the Level 1 A, yellow for Level 1 B, etc.
At the top of the sheet I have a place for the student to enter his practice goals and his name. In the right hand column there is a space for the student to enter the name of a song he would like to learn. There is a section labeled “New Techniques” that lists some of the new playing techniques that the student will learn at each level, and another opportunity to receive stickers.
On the bottom half of the right hand column I have a section labeled “Songs I Can Play”. These are supplementary pieces that students can learn in additional to the pieces in their lesson book. I usually leave some blank lines at the end of the column so that we can enter in some seasonal music i.e. Halloween, Christmas, or Chanukah songs. The “Ready for a Challenge!” section will include a few pieces which will hopefully be familiar to the student and provide a little extra motivation.
At Level 1 A I teach most of the “Songs I Can Play” by rote, especially at the earliest lessons. I like to have each child leave the first lesson playing an easy song by rote such as Hot Cross Buns or a very short version of Three Blind Mice. I have them play the songs with each hand alone and then at subsequent lessons we graduate to playing the song with both hands in unison. When they return for the second lesson we can then enter a sticker on the song.
My students love adding stickers to these sheets and I hope your students will also enjoy them! I welcome your feedback and comments about this teaching tool. This is the first in the series of Reward Sheets that I will be posting. I will be adding Reward Sheets for the next Levels of the Premier Piano Course as well as Reward Sheets for several other method books.
