This is a project for creating a foam carving in the style of a Joan Miro or a Pablo Sculpture. It is targeted at high school students, but it wold also work with junior high students, or middle years students. When I did this project I used floral carving foam because it is very easy to carve, however blue or pink insulation foam would also work for this project. Both foams are easy to get, and not too expensive. I have used both foams for different carving projects, and students are able to work with ease.
Supplies needed for carving are some files, and sanding paper, and possibly exacto knives.
- a powerpoint with 17 slides showing examples of both artists, a foam carved example, and some information about the artists and the process
-a 2 page handout that gives some of the same information in the powerpoint for students with photo examples
-a Rubric print out
The students liked this project because they got to use hands on tools, and the carving process moves along quickly.
Depending on the class, students probably will take 2-3 classes carving, then 1-2 classes priming and painting their pieces.
