Learning to multiply by two- and three-digit numbers can be difficult and rather boring for students. Pick Five! is a game involving five index cards, a place to show multiplication steps, and it has that certain element of chance which makes multiplication a bit more fun!
Students will play the game in pairs. Each pair will receive five index cards on which they will write five random digits from 1 to 9. (I made the cards for my students in advance of playing the game so that they could actually read them!) Students will shuffle the cards, write the digits on the activity sheet in the order they were selected from the pile, and then multiplied.
My students have enjoyed this game, and it gives me a chance to walk around the room while the students are playing the game and check for their understanding of the multiplication process. This is related to Numbers and Operations in Base-Ten of Common Core math.
