Students pick an addition or subtraction flash card . They write the problem. Then they draw it. I am going to have them draw dots using 2 colors. Then they write the answer. The paper can also be used to solve word problems. They can write the equation they will use to solve, then draw a picture and then write the equation with the answer.

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
