The distributive property of multiplication can help students multiply when factors are larger. However, I found that it was difficult for my students to pick the best way to decompose a factor. There are better ways to decompose numbers to make the math easier. I created this packet to help them discover the way that works best for them.
This packet can help students who are struggling to decompose and it can all help students who already "get it" to extend the idea.
-A worksheet in which students find all the possible ways to decompose numbers 6-12
-A color 8X11 "poster" that can be hung in your classroom as a resource
-A worksheet to decompose the same problem in 2 ways. This helps students see that factors can be decomposed in multiple ways and that some ways are easier.
-A reflection page to help students discover how decomposing works for them.
-A practice worksheet
-An extension explanation for decomposing even larger number
-Extension practice worksheet that allows students to decompose even larger numbers.
-An answer key
