COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICS
Grade 3 Measurement and Data: Represent and Interpret Data
CCSS.Math.Content.3.MD.B.3 Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.
This activity set will develop your students’ ability to organize, represent, and interpret data with a series of 3 types of activities.
•First, students will be presented 2 different pictographs and 2 different bar graphs in which they are asked to answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another.
•Second, the students will be presented data and asked to represent the data in a pictograph and in a bar graph. Once the graphs are created, they will be required to ask their own questions about the graphs and provide answers with explanations as to why those answers are correct.
•Finally, students will organize their own survey to collect, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories. Once they create a graph, they will ask a series of questions related to the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another. They will then create an answer key on a separate sheet to accompany their graph and questions.
