What are ESL Newcomers?
ESL Newcomers are students who are new to the country. These students are adjusting to a new language, culture, and educational system. It can be challenging for an ESL Newcomer to communicate and express basic needs at school. This picture cue card is a resource that ESL Newcomers can use to communicate and express some basic needs while they are learning English.
Tips: Print in color, laminate, and allow each student to keep the picture cue card on top of his or her desk. Demonstrate how to use the picture cues by modeling the process. Point to each picture, say the word, and direct the student to each need. Allow students the opportunity to practice using the picture cues. This set includes 1 large picture cue card and 12 small picture cue cards that can be cut and distributed.
Picture cues include:
~ I don’t understand.
~ I don’t feel well.
