In order to raise students awareness of the power of poetic language, this 17-page package includes 10 photographs (8 photographs, 1 painting, one drawing) with writing prompts. Seven forms of poetry are introduced: free verse, cinquain, pastoral, diamante, haiku, tanke and nursery rhymes. Included are charts which briefly name the type of poetry, its characteristics and/or structure, its history and an example. There are photographs/ pictures for each type of poetry with three extra images for additional writing practice. For those three photographs, the students are instructed to choose forms of poetry which appeal to them and to compose their poems.
Students are presented with a photograph ( or drawing/painting), and given a few prompts to think about as they study the image before them. They are instructed to think of descriptive words and to record their thoughts before composing their poems.
This is a great resource because it can accompany other lessons such as figurative speech, similes, adjectives etc.. It gives students an opportunity to create word pictures. As they gain more confidence in using words effectively, it will make them stronger writers in every genre of writing.
Pages are given in both the Canadian and American English spellings.
Due to the digital nature of this product, no refunds will be given.
All photographs, drawings and paintings used in this package come from the public domain.
I hope that this package will engage your students as they learn about the beauty of poetic language.
