It’s not uncommon for ESL teachers to wonder from day to day what they will be teaching. So many materials have to be developed from scratch in order to be appealing and accessible to middle and secondary English language learners.
But these made-from-scratch materials can be just as stressful for beginning ESL students to learn from as they are for teachers to make. When materials are context-reduced and image-free, the students must scramble to connect what they already know in their native languages with what they are attempting to decode.
The Picture This: Beginning ESL Vocabulary Bundles can put the minds of both ESL students and ESL teachers at ease. By purchasing one bundle, teachers and students have access to five thematic units of visual and fully reproducible vocabulary activities that are fun, edifying, useful, and easy to understand.
Each of the five units contains a reproducible 10-25 minute activity for every day of the week. These reproducibles include:
*A vocabulary word list
*Vocabulary pictures (32 new words per unit)
*A crossword puzzle
*A word search puzzle
*Oral dictation sentences and test
*A helpful spelling test form
Here is a sample of how a teacher might use one of the five units in the Picture This: Beginning Vocabulary Bundle: Volume Six:
Unit: Car & Road
Monday: Students learn 32 picture vocabulary words, writing notes in their own languages under the pictures or creating flashcards by cutting and pasting the pictures on cards.
After reviewing the new words, students complete a crossword puzzle containing clues for these words.
Tuesday: Students practice pronouncing all of the words and take a quiz over 16 of the words.
Wednesday: Students continue practicing all of the words and take a quiz over the remaining 16 words.
Thursday: Students take an oral dictation test to discriminate the sounds associated with the words and to reinforce correct spelling.
Friday: Students take a final spelling test over 16 of the 32 words (teacher’s choice.) Upon finishing the test, students may complete the word search puzzle in class or at home for homework.
*The beauty of teaching to a theme each week is that the door is wide open for related speaking/listening/ reading/ writing activities. For example, during the week devoted to the Car & Road vocabulary, teachers could ask students to write journal entries about what they might see out of the window of a car during a road trip to a favorite or exotic location.
Weekly vocabulary learning is empowering --not boring --for the beginning ESL student. By giving ESL students regular access each week to the words they need to express themselves in English in various situations and content areas, a strong foundation in literacy will soon emerge.
The Picture This: Beginning Vocabulary Bundle: Volume Six contains five vocabulary units related to these themes commonly encountered in the United States: Car & Road, Places, Prepositions, Body (Part Two), and Airport.
