Pierre-Auguste Renoir, aka Auguste Renoir, 1841 – 1919, was a French painter who led in developing the Impressionist style of the 19th Century. Although he could paint any scene, his portraits of women and their sensuality are among his most prized. In the later part of his career, he shifted towards a more Rubenesque portrayal of women in his portraits. At the very end of his career, these female subjects were often monumental in size. They led some to mock them as grotesqueries. It is only these later women that were much slower to win an audience. Renoir was, above all, captivated by women with opal-like skin which reflected light superbly. His children were also accomplished with his son, filmmaker Jean Renoir, being regarded as a pioneer filmmaker in the 20th Century.
