Description

Pig Latin is the perfect choice for a fun, easy ice breaker or more advanced language exploration team-building objective. Bring this silly language game to your next English class and let your students have a go at cracking the code. How does it work? What are the rules? Shh! Don't tell them they are actually doing linguistic deconstruction and analysis!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • This lesson is highly adaptable.
  • Includes an assortment of lessons that can be tailored to various levels, skill sets, and learner types.
  • Activates higher metalinguistic thinking and task-based instruction to keep students engaged from art-stay to inish-fay.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The three simplified rules to Pig Latin are included, with illustrated examples for your visual learners. Class begins with an introduction to Pig Latin, examples, and discussion questions about made-up languages.

The first activity is a simple translation, followed by a more complex Translation Race challenge to encourage group work and team-building. Students must decipher the 5 Little Piggies poem, which has been written completely in Pig Latin. The third activity is a writing task. Students are instructed to write a secret message to their partner in Pig Latin for them to decipher.

The lesson is a playful yet educational foray into the wacky world of words. Students will be exposed to metalanguage, including terms like consonants, clusters, and vowels. They will also be required to look at languages from an objective point of view. They will come away from the lesson with an interesting and enjoyable new language, and Pig Latin will maintain its small place in the hearts of English speakers worldwide.
