I use this pack in my first grade classroom when teaching
“Pig Pens”—two letter combinations of vowels which make new sounds—ou, ow, au, aw, oo, oi, oy, and ew
This pack includes:
3 board games
**Don’t get stuck in the Pig Pen—au, aw, ou, ow (2-4 players)
**Oink-oi, oy, and the 2 sounds of oo (2-4 players)
**This Little Piggy Went to Market-au, aw, ou, ow, oi, oy, and the 2 sounds of oo (2 players)
Sort between the /ew/ sound-ew, ui, oo, ue—including a recording sheet
Posters explaining Pig Pens
**One showing the 6 groups
**5 individual posters explain the sounds the letter combinations make
The words listed in the various games and sorts vary in difficulty and other essential phonetic skills including: blends, two-letter digraphs, short and long vowels sounds, silent e, adjacent vowels, bossy R, and some of the 5 rules of Y.
They can be played in either a literacy center or a small group setting.
