Turn just 13 geography terms into a great team challenge! Print out this puzzle and provide it to student 'teams'. Have them compete against each other to see who can solve it first.  You'll enjoy the feisty competitiveness of your students and the dialogue between them as they puzzle it out.  The solution?  The puzzle is a 2 x 5 rectangle with a border that says GEOGRAPHY...but don't tell them!!!

Vocabulary included in puzzle:

1. Equator: an imaginary circle around the middle of the earth, halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole
2. Globe: a round model of the Earth
3. Hemisphere: Half of the earth
4. Latitude: distance north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees
5. Longitude: Distance east or west of the prime meridian, measured in degrees
6. prime meridian: line of the global grid running from the North Pole to the South Pole through Greenwich, England; starting point for measuring degrees of east and west longitude
7. Cartographer: a person who makes maps
8. Map legend: Explains what the symbols on a map represent
9. Compass rose: A tool on a map showing cardinal (N,E,S,W) and intermediate (NE,SE,NW,SW) directions.
10. Continent: one of the large landmasses of the earth
11. Map scale: compares a distance on a map with a distance in the real world
12. Meridian: one of many lines on the global grid running from the North Pole to the South Pole; used to measure degrees of longitude
13. Parallel: any of the imaginary circles around the earth parallel to the equator, marking degrees of latitude
