This Oregon Trail simulation uses the old-school Oregon Trail game to help students build an understanding of what life was like for pioneers traveling west in the 1800s.
Students will create their pioneer character, stock up on supplies, and choose a starting off point. Along the way they will document their journey and make decisions about their pace, rations, and route. Each decision will effect whether they make it Oregon or not.
When they reach Oregon (or whatever the end point of their journey may be) students will write a journal documenting their trip with details from the tracking sheet.
This is an awesome interactive activity that can be group work, partner work, or individual. Can be used as an introduction to Westward Expansion, as a part of a larger unit, or as a review. My favorite way to use this activity is to pair it with my Pioneer Instagram project (available in my shop).
