This product has been updated to contain two scripts.
The first script, which is almost 2 pages long and has 27 solo speaking parts, PIONEERS MOVING WEST, involves students in reading, reviewing information about, and anticipating the life, fears, and attitudes of settlers about to embark on journeys west in covered wagons. The script was created with 6th graders who were asked to imagine the thoughts, hopes, and concerns of people leaving to settle the lands west of the Mississippi. It’s part of a collection in my book CURRICULUM-BASED READERS THEATRE SCRIPTS: SOCIAL STUDIES.
The second script has the title SETTLING THE AMERICAN WEST and its theme is essentially the same. This script is shorter--only one page long--and has 10 solo speaking roles.
Both scripts are written for solo speakers with many parts for ALL so that teachers can use them with a whole class. Reading and rehearsing the script reinforces and develops an awareness and understanding of the hardships that pioneers anticipated during the Westward Expansion while also increasing reading fluency and engaging students in a dramatic approach to learning facts.
Students enjoy creating and performing gestures and sound effects where indicated in the stage directions. And—because it is a script—they do not mind reading and re-reading the information.
