Do you need 5-10 minutes to work with the others students in your mixed groups? Want your articulation students to be focused on their sounds during that time? Use this pipe cleaner ❤️articulation station❤️ activity when you have mixed groups. That way the student working on articulation is still focusing on his/her goal while you are helping another student in the group. This can also be a ❤️quick articulation activity❤️ by having the student string a jewelry bead on the pipe cleaner for each sound production made.
When students have mastered their sounds, you can have them create a pipe cleaner bead practice they can wear around school and home to remind them about their sound. Send these task cards home for additional practice!
⭐What You Need For A Pipe Cleaner Articulation Station: Pipe Cleaners (cut in half) Letter Beads and/or Jewelry Beads (You can get at Michael's or Amazon) Articulation Stimulus Task Cards (holes punched in each task card)
⭐Storage Of The Task Cards: You can use a scrapbook storage container or a plastic container to store your articulation station task cards and beads.
❤️Directions for Setting Up Your Articulation Stations❤️:
Set up an area in your speech room for the student to practice his/her speech sounds. Print out the visual behavior expectations and display them by the station. Review the behavioral expectations with the student before starting the station. Set a timer for the amount of time the student will be at the station.
Print the articulation stimulus task cards, laminate for durability, and cut out. Put a hole in each row of the task cards using a hole puncher. Cut the pipe cleaners to desired length and loop through each hole. Twist the pipe clear to attach. Put out letter beads or jewelry beads at the station. The student spells the articulation words with the letter beads and then quietly practices the word 5x. The student can also orally create a sentence with the word using the correct sound production or he/she can write in a sentence on a piece of paper with the target word. For students who are struggling with spelling words, have the student string a jewelry bead on the pipe cleaner for each production. The student can practice his/her speech sound each time he/she takes off the bead from the pipe cleaner as well. Using jewelry beads will get more repetitions faster. You could set a timer for 2-5 minutes and do quick drill practice with the jewelry beads. Then, the student can use the letter beads to spell the words.
When the timer goes off, the student can transition to the next station or the group can transition to a whole group activity. The speech pathologist can do a quick check to see how the student did with his/her sounds in words. This articulation station activity is best used independently when the student has established his/her target sound at the word level independently with 80% accuracy or higher. If the student hasn’t mastered the sound at the word level, you can still have the student do the stations and highlight where they hear/see his/her sound.
If all your students in your group are working on specific sound productions, use this as a whole group activity. Give each student a task card that has his/her sounds.
