Description

Do your students have difficulty extracting meaning from vocabulary words they just don't know? This problem causes a huge breakdown in comprehension when students are reading (or even listening!) Working on this skill can be boring, but NOT when you incorporate pirate words and phrases into the lesson! This download is guaranteed to keep your students interested, engaged and motivated to work on this tough skill.

What's included in this download (and how to use it):

* a handy a reference page to help you teach strategies that help students sharpen this skill of using context clues to decipher vocabulary (which is often very difficult for kids with language deficits). This page can also as a reference for students.

* 24 SHORT (so as to not frustrate slower readers) pirate themed passages with 1-4 pirate words or phrases that are likely to be unfamiliar to the students. After reading each passage, students use the strategies included to tell what the underlined words, phrases or expressions mean. They should also explain what clues helped them. They can do this orally or in writing- whichever suits you and your students’ goals for class of language therapy.

* A pirate dictionary (definitions of the pirate words and expressions arranged in dictionary style). In addition to using these pages to look up the definitions of the pirate lingo, you can also use it to work on synonyms. Read the pirate words/phrases and discuss their meaning. It can also help your students TALK LIKE A PIRATE!

Challenge your students to think of a word or phrase that THEY use that means the same as the pirate words? In other words, have students generate synonyms. If desired, use the passages again and have students try their English synonyms in place of the underlined words in the pirate passages! If it still makes sense, they’ll know their synonym was right!

Prep: just print the pages, cut out the passages (laminate if desired) and go get your context clues on!! No wasted paper!

Thanks for considering my products for your therapy!
