Okay this is seriously a blast! My second graders LOVED this (probably especially because I dressed up like a pirate when we did this.)
But basically what you do is tape up all the numbers around the room and then divide the class into teams or pirate crews. (I did this by table)
For each pirate crew you assign a captain, sailing master, and scribe. The rest of the students in that group (and I made sure to emphasize that this was a CRUCIAL role) make up the pirate crew. The job descriptions are included in the file.
The students then go around using the clues given to them to find and record the numbers. The numbers 3 digits, and the students will have practice writing the numbers in standard form, expanded form, and word form. They will also have practice representing the numbers with place value blocks, determining if the numbers are greater than or less than another number, and identifying odd vs. even numbers.
