This differentiated activity consists of 12 task cards that will help your students review topics related to units of measurement in science. This bundled set includes six Pirate’s Path to the Treasure task cards and six Gnome’s Path Home task cards.
Note: You will be able to purchase the individual Pirate’s Path to the Treasure or the Gnome’s Path Home (units of measurement) sets soon. You can, however, purchase them both now as a bundled set for less!
Topics covered include the following: SI prefixes (deci, centi, milli, micro, nano, pico, deca, kilo, mega, giga, and tera), mass, weight, length, volume, liters, meters, grams, scale, newtons, balance, graduated cylinder, meniscus, displacement, and density.
Students will find the pirate’s path to the treasure or the gnome’s path home by completing each matching activity. The first card will say “Start” and have the first question. Find the answer to the first question and place it above the start card. The card that has the first answer will also have the second question. Continue to find the matches until you have created the pirate’s entire path to the treasure. The last card in the “Pirate” set will have the treasure, the last answer, and will also say “Ahoy Matey”. The last card in the “Gnome” set will say “Gnome Sweet Home.”
How is this differentiated to meet the needs of your students? Each set of task cards (you have two separate sets –Pirate and Gnome) are numbered from 1-6. Task #’s 1, 2, 4, and 5 for each set require students to complete a 9 card matching activity that reviews 8 vocabulary words each. Each of these tasks are a great option for students who may get overwhelmed with too many vocabulary cards at one time. It is also a good option to use if you do not have as much time. Task numbers 3 and 6 (for each set) require students to complete an 18 card matching activity. Task number 3 is mostly a review of vocabulary and concepts from task numbers 1 and 2. Task number 6 is mostly a review of vocabulary and concepts from tasks 4 and 5. Task numbers 3 and 6 are easier for students if they have already completed the shorter tasks. Students who need more of a challenge can do tasks 3 and 6 without doing the other shorter tasks first.
The Gnome and Pirate set are very similar in content, but the information is in a different order. Students who need a lot of extra practice could complete both sets. Students who do not need as much practice may choose to complete one set only. You may choose to use one set earlier in the unit and then use the second one later as a review. The second set could also be a great option for early finishers.
Directions for each task are listed on the task cards. Choose the tasks that best suit the needs of your students.
Full color versions of each matching activity are provided in two different sizes.
Use these activities with individuals, pairs, or groups of students. An answer sheet is provided.
This is an "EASY PREP" activity that will give your students a lot of practice with the vocabulary and concepts that they have learned in your class. All you need to do is print, laminate, and cut the cards. The cards are not in order on the sheets so you could require the students to cut out their own cards. Give each student or group of students a copy of the answer sheet. All tasks can be completed without the answer sheet if you would like to visually check their work instead.
